- In my own humble opinion based upon what orthopedic's told me for 10 years
- of a trick knee (because surgeons wouldn't risk surgery on a non-pro
- athlete), that the ACL can not heal itself. What they do is try to increase
- the strength of the ligaments and muscles around the knee to compensate.
- Such methodology is fine for a non-skier or someone who isn't very
- active. In my case, just walking around, hop up on a curb crossing the
- street, anything could pop it out with associated deterioration of the
- ligaments. Finally after ten years, I tore cartilage. Fortunately the
- Doctor I went to, (which was an accident of fate in its own right), was
- learning a relatively new method for ACL reconstruction and offer to
- fix the instability. Of course I jumped at the chance and couldn't be
- happier. I was walking the next day though in a soft cast because all
- those dislocates had stretched my ligaments. The next year I skied with
- a brace (surgury May, ski January) and the last 5 years, I've skied without
- the brace. That knee is now a little stronger than the normal one. So
- I say without hesitation, I would be really concerned about a doctors
- motivation for saying you can get a long without the surgury. Ortho
- types tend to be pretty skitish about malpractice suits. For those
- curious, the proceedure was to take a part of the outer leg sheet
- with a bone chip and route it into the back of the knee and attach
- it to the front of the lower leg bone. Since that sheet is attached
- at the hip, I have natural attachment at both ends. The old method used
- staples to attach to the bone. Anyway the new combo is very strong.
