- I am rather surprised by this advice. Downhilling in Aug 91, I tore
- medial ligaments in both knees, did some cartilage damage and partially
- tore the ACL. The advice given to me after arthroscopy was that
- "conventional medical wisdom says that the ACL DOES NOT repair, but I've
- seen enough damaged knees to believe that this was not strictly true."
- This comment was only made because my ACL had not completely snapped.
- I'm no expert, but I think I'd want a second opinion if I were you. I've
- ended up not having a knee reconstruction yet. This however has meant
- that MUCH remedial physiotherapy has been necessary. There is NO
- question of just sitting around and waiting to get better.
-
- Be that as it may, I strongly agree with another respondant that you
- should go to a Sports Medicine specialist. I went to a centre that looks
- after one of our National Rugby League teams. There are a number of
- advantages to such places, not the least of which is that they expect to
- be dealing with mad buggers that want to go back to the same sport AS
- SOON AS POSSIBLE. They are very aggressive in their approach and
- challenge you both physically and psychologically. Do it SOON!
-
- The November 92 edition of "Skiing" magazine has an excellent article on
- ACL damage. I didn't ski for 3 weekends and didn't do any knee exercises
- either. It really scared me how fast the knee went backwards. Their
- second article on Dr Richard Steadman has given me new enthusiasm to keep
- up the work. Well worth reading.
