- Expert skiers with travel plans to Tahoe in the near future should consider
- cancelling and picking an alternate location, due to the icy conditions
- caused by rain and wind on Weds-Thurs 20-21 January. However, conditions
- are very good for beginner to advanced skiers on groomed runs.
-
- Sources at Squaw Valley reported up to 4 inches of rain fell, and winds
- reached speeds of up to 130 MPH, during the storm, and the snow level was
- above 8000 feet. The result is that all expert terrain is closed at
- resorts including Squaw, Alpine Meadows, and Sugar Bowl, due to extremely
- icy conditions. For example, all of KT-22 at Squaw Valley is closed, with
- the exception of the saddle on the back side; similar restrictions are in
- place at the Headwall chair.
-
- A source at Sugar Bowl said "In order for conditions to improve, a wet snow
- will be needed to adhere to the ice, followed by a foot or more of dry snow
- to provide a reasonable base."
-
- Note that these are unofficial sources. Official sources such as the ski
- report phone line are reporting "packed powder" conditions, with no mention
- of the icy conditions.
-
- Again, this advisory is only for expert skiers; skiers that ski groomed
- runs will not be affected.
