- I concur with Rick's comments based on my own experience. I have had
- the classic "chronic low-back pain" for over 20 years, and have been
- diving almost all of that time. I have been lucky (?) enough to avoid
- surgery however.
-
- * If it hurts, don't do it.
-
- * Be very careful about carrying gear, especially tanks and weight belts,
- and especially walking in full gear between the dive site and your car
- (beach diving).
-
- For example, carrying a tank in each hand (balanced)
- is easier for me than carrying a tank in one hand (unbalanced).
- I carry a single tank with two arms, cradled like a baby, or
- offset the load with a gear bag. I carry weight belts around
- my waist.
-
- * Weight loss, sit-ups, leg stretching, and swimming laps with fins really
- help me a lot.
-
- I am extremely careful with my dive profiles, since prior injury and scar
- tissue seems to be more prone to a bends "hit" than normal healthy tissue...
-
- My physician is a diver himself; I too recommend that you find a physician
- very familiar with the stresses that diving can put on your body.
-
- Here's hoping that you can stay off the floor... :-) (those with bad backs
- know what that means...)
