  18. You can contact the DES from anywhere in the continental United States by 
  19. dialing 1-800-645-1470.

  21. When the DES answering machine asks you to leave a message, please give us 
  22. the following information:

  24. -- Your name and telephone number/mailing address
  25. -- The body of water and its location
  26. -- What you saw (or should have seen but didn't) and when
  27. -- The water and weather conditions of the sighting
  28.

  30. We are looking for information about aquatic events, which might be anything 
  31. from unusually obscure water to dramatic changes in fish populations to the 
  32. presence of barrels. If it looks odd to you, we'd like to hear about it, as 
  33. would a lot of other people.

  35. After corroboration by another diver or persons knowledgeable about that body 
  36. of water, the information will be distributed. Recipients of that information 
  37. will include state and private organizations concerned with that water.

  39. The information will also enter the DES database.

  41. The DES database has two major categories: freshwater and saltwater. The 
  42. freshwater category comprises two different general habitats: Lakes/Ponds, 
  43. Rivers/Streams. The saltwater category comprises three different general 
  44. habitats: Intertidal, Coastal, and Offshore. Within these categories, 
  45. Region/Watershed distinctions refine the data distribution for trend analysis.

  47. The DES database is in its infancy, and we hope that, by making this 
  48. toll-free number available, we have made it easier to file an initial 
  49. DES report.
