  13. been following this newsgroup, so if this is not an appropriate topic,
  14. please just ignore it ... )

  16. Last Friday (1/22), the train tunnel south of Felton, in Henry Cowell
  17. Park, burned up, and both ends collapsed.  (That's the one that the Santa
  18. Cruz & Big Trees train used to go through on its way from Roaring Camp to
  19. the Boardwalk.)

  22. (1/27) [San Lorenzo] Valley Press.  Sorry, I have neither scanner nor
  23. patience enough to type it in.  But here's a pathetic few more details
  24. that came out during the mailing-list conversation:

  28. No, none.  In fact, the last paragraph of the Valley Press article
  29. suggests that they may never know the cause, due to the way both ends of
  30. the tunnel collapsed.  They also did discover that none of the wood had
  31. ever been treated with (highly flammable) creosote, so that was not a
  32. factor.

  34. The Valley Press article also suggested that they will likely try to
  35. rebuild a workaround rather than "daylight" the tunnel.  But having been
  36. there, I sure can't imagine where else they could possible route that
  37. track.  Does anyone know if they are looking for volunteer railroad
  38. enthusiasts to help out with the rebuild?  (I wonder if they even know of
  39. the existence of railroad worker-volunteers ...)

  43. Yup.  I've been told of a fair amount of work being done by volunteers
  44. on a set of tracks that go through Niles Canyon.  Also, restoration of
  45. old locomotives -- I have a friend who spent a few Saturdays last
  46. summer de-rusting a few square feet of a locomotive.

  50. and/or whether the SC&BTRR folks would work with volunteers?
