- (From a local Santa Cruz (CA) mailing list, sligthly edited ... I haven't
- been following this newsgroup, so if this is not an appropriate topic,
- please just ignore it ... )
-
- Last Friday (1/22), the train tunnel south of Felton, in Henry Cowell
- Park, burned up, and both ends collapsed. (That's the one that the Santa
- Cruz & Big Trees train used to go through on its way from Roaring Camp to
- the Boardwalk.)
-
- For details, check out last Saturday's Santa Cruz Sentinel, or today's
- (1/27) [San Lorenzo] Valley Press. Sorry, I have neither scanner nor
- patience enough to type it in. But here's a pathetic few more details
- that came out during the mailing-list conversation:
-
- > Any indication of the cause?
-
- No, none. In fact, the last paragraph of the Valley Press article
- suggests that they may never know the cause, due to the way both ends of
- the tunnel collapsed. They also did discover that none of the wood had
- ever been treated with (highly flammable) creosote, so that was not a
- factor.
-
- The Valley Press article also suggested that they will likely try to
- rebuild a workaround rather than "daylight" the tunnel. But having been
- there, I sure can't imagine where else they could possible route that
- track. Does anyone know if they are looking for volunteer railroad
- enthusiasts to help out with the rebuild? (I wonder if they even know of
- the existence of railroad worker-volunteers ...)
-
- > Are there such things as railroad worker volunteers???
-
- Yup. I've been told of a fair amount of work being done by volunteers
- on a set of tracks that go through Niles Canyon. Also, restoration of
- old locomotives -- I have a friend who spent a few Saturdays last
- summer de-rusting a few square feet of a locomotive.

- So, anyway, does anyone out here in rec.railroad know more details,
- and/or whether the SC&BTRR folks would work with volunteers?
