- You've got to be kidding! Has the State of New York found a gold mine or
- something? Seriously, it is and has been my opinion since the days when
- Amtrak was still "in the womb" and being called "Railpax" that there ought
- to have been/ought to be included in its system a train from Hoboken (Penn
- Station, New York if the connector in the right direction ever gets built) to
- Scranton, Binghamton, Elmira, Corning and at least Hornell if not Buffalo.
- Back in 1971 it would have been easy to do. Now a lot of the trackage between
- Scranton and Port Morris is decaying in the brush (in PA) or torn up (in NJ).
-
- Much more likely, though, whatever report your friend heard probably related
- to excursion or "tourist train" service operated by NYS&W, or possibly by the
- Tioga Central. The latter outfit was booted out of its home on the former LV
- line out of Owego, and its equipment is now stored at Whitney Point. According
- to "usually reliable sources", they have been dickering with the Suzie Q for
- permission to run it someplace, preferably out of Binghamton, using the
- historic restored former DL&W Station. I hope something comes of it, but I
- wouldn't advise holding your breath!
