  20. Just a sidelight - perhaps the best-known and most-loved turntables
  21. in "America" are the tables for the San Francisco cable cars, used
  22. for the single-ended cars (have grip lever and brake controls one
  23. end only).

  25. We call them turntables here. I'm curious why they would be called
  26. "plates" on the other side of the pond? Are the pits planked over
  27. so they appear plate-shaped?
