- Don't assume that any other country has an equivalent to the U.S.
- Constitution's Bill of Rights. Very few countries do. It's my
- understanding that England doesn't even have a written constitution,
- but rather considers the body of tradition and precedent to be their
- constitution. Canada didn't have an equivalent to the Bill of
- Rights until a few years ago when their Charter of Rights and
- Freedoms was implemented. In the U.K., the government can impose
- prior restraint to prevent the press from publishing any information
- they deem unsuitable for public consumption, something which, if I
- recall my journalism classes correctly, has been illegal in America
- since 1752. As far as I know, there has only been one instance of
- it in America in this century. In the U.K., it is illegal to
- broadcast the voice of a member of Sinn Fein, a legal political
- party, because of their association with the I.R.A. (Please, no
- flames, no comment on the policies of either of these organizations
- pro or con is intended). Sinn Fein comments are braodcast on the
- BBC by having them read by an actor.
-
- Don't take for granted the freedoms the Constitution guarantees
- Americans. They don't exist universally by a long shot.
