- I am just starting to wrap my head around the problems involved in cataloging
- negatives and prints. I want to use a searchable computer file set to hold
- information about exposure, subject, camera and lense used, time and place,
- etc., etc. I want every image (negatives, transparencies, and prints) to have
- a unique identifier so I can go from image to computer or from computer to
- image.
-
- I want to be able to search for images (negatives & prints) based on subject.
- One image will certainly have multiple subject headings. I fully expect to
- expand the subject headings for one image over time, as I come up with
- different ways to categorize the same image.
-
- As I publish (and hopefully sell) images, I want to be able to keep track of
- to whom I sold the image (with one image potentially sold to multiple buyers,
- which issue of the publication my image was published in, etc.). I would also
- like to track how much I got paid for each sale of each image. I think you
- get the idea.
-
- I want to print labels for my negatives, transparencies, and prints on my
- Laserjet-III. I would prefer to have the cataloging program do the printing
- rather than my having to re-type label information into a label printing
- program.
-
- I use a PC clone with MS DOS 5.0 and Windows 3.1. My spreadsheet is Lotus
- 1-2-3 for Windows and my word processor is Ami Pro 3.0. I am willing to pay
- shareware or commercial fees. I am willing to write my own, if I can not find
- an existing solution. I bet I am hardly the first person to confront or
- attempt to solve this problem.
-
- 1) Is there already an industry standard for image cataloging and label
- printing for DOS or Windows? I bet professional photographers and stock
- houses already have this problem well under control.
-
- 2) Are there already existing (shareware or commercial) solutions using
- templates for the Lotus 1-2-3/W spreadsheet or Ami Pro 3.0?
-
- 3) Can someone please point me to publications containing advertisements for
- such products, or to an organization of photographic professionals that
- keeps track of such things?
-
- This problem may require the use of a relational database, since I want so
- much expandability over time and I want to do what sound like relational
- queries (which images has this stock agency purchased from me since 1992, how
- much did they pay me, and what was the most common subject type). If I can
- find a set of specifications for what such a relational database ought to do,
- I am willing to buy myself a copy of Paradox for Windows and do the interface
- and schema myself. I understand Chen diagrams (also known as entity
- relationship diagrams and have used Unix relational databases before). But I
- would rather pay someone else for a solution that someone else has developed
- and tested so I can spend my time photographing. Suggestions are welcome.
