- I have one of each. My mother used to raise GSD's, and I raise Labs (I
- like to duck hunt alot, so Labs were an obvious choice for me). IMHO,
- both are fine animals and I am really torn trying decide which is
- "better". Perhaps a better question is "which is the best breed for
- you?". If you are planning on occasionally (or even frequently) using
- the dog for hunting, the Lab wins hands down (GSD's make lousy hunting
- dogs!). If you want a dog that will help protect your family, the GSD is
- the better choice.
-
-
- They are about equally easy to train. The GSD sheds alot more, but Labs
- *do* shed (some people might tell you otherwise). GSD's tend to be the
- more loyal of the 2 breeds (which explains why the Guide Dog foundation
- prefers Labs to GSD's - the GSD will often bond too tightly to it's
- trainer and have some trouble adjusting to it's new owner). But for a
- dog for a family, that's probably an asset (my GSD was given to us when
- he was 2.5 years old. It took him about 6 months to really view us as
- his family, but once he did, he was bonded just as tightly as if we had
- gotten him as a puppy. The Guide Dog Foundation does use GSD's because
- they are extremely intelligent (imho, the most intelligent of all
- breeds).
-
- Health - Labs tend to have *slightly* fewer problems with CHD (hip
- displysia) than GSD's. My GSD is dysplastic, but he is 11.5 years old
- and is still asymptomatic. You also have to be a somewhat more careful
- about temperament with GSD's, but that is good advice for any breed of
- dog.
-
- Some may tell you otherwise, but I feel like both are about equally good
- with children, other pets, etc. Of the 2, I think the GSD is the better
- looking dog (ok, Cindy and Liza can blast me now ;-) ).
-
-
- My advise: IF you are getting the dog for a family pet (sounds like it),
- I think the GSD is probably a slightly better choice.
