  26. It's true that some people are scummy, but we don't always
  27. know the whole story. The poodle people (and maybe even this
  28. woman) may have had another situation they just weren't up to
  29. explaining.

  31. A close friend of mine took her 12 year old, ailing dog to her vet.
  32. The dog was blind (and becoming cranky as a result), and was ill
  33. with a variety of serious problems. The quality of his life was
  34. deterioriating and he was loaded with arthritis.
  35. My friend explained to the vet that she wanted the dog put down,
  36. it was time, and she wasn't able to deal with the care requirements
  37. any longer.
  38. The vet absolutely spazzed and castigated her with comments about
  39. the availability of medical options, the number of years of good
  40. times the dog had given her, 'and now you're tired or
  41. bored and you just want to dump the dog'...etc etc.
  42. What my friend wasn't able to bring herself to explain (in between 
  43. insults) was that her husband was dying and between the two she just
  44. couldn't handle it. She had to be at the hospital all day&night, and there
  45. just wasn't anyone to step in. As the dog was in increasing pain, it
  46. seemed the right time to do this.

  48. Now maybe this is unusual, and the poodle people (and others) aren't
  49. in such a dificult situation...or maybe you agree with the vet.
  50. But dealing with overwhelming personal crisis can make you face up
  51. to hard decisions which you don't always feel capable of exploring with
  52. complete strangers. Unless I know better, I'd like to give people
  53. the benefit of the doubt. I have to say that anyone who would
  54. want a dog put gently to sleep rather than have to adjust to
  55. the confusion of a new home and new people after 5 years, and who would
  56. go to the trouble of grooming the dog beforehand, probably
  57. love their animal. It may be a little odd, but we each approach things
  58. in our own way.
