- Dogs dig as a result of instinctive behaviours that are usually associated
- with saving food for later consumption. The domestic dog will still go through
- these motions even if there is no food/bones to bury.
-
- In hot weather, dogs without shade will often scrape down to the cooler dirt in
- an attempt to remain cool. Dogs will also roll in fresh dirt to thwart biting
- bugs.
-
- Some dogs seem to enjoy the attention that their craters tend to elicit
- from their bewildered owners...go figure.
-
- How do you stop a dog from digging? Patience and a swift response to the
- negative behaviour is essential. There are no quick fixes when curtailing
- instinctive behaviours.
-
- Most dogs tend to excavate the same spot over and over if given the
- opportunity. If you can bury a hose nozzle in the hole and turn it on the
- instant the dog begins to dig again, the shock value will usually
- prevent that spot from being used again.
-
- Repeat as needed until the dog stops digging...it will eventually get the
- message.
-
- If a hose is not workable for you, then a big jug of water will have to do.
- When the dog digs, come running from the house like a screaming banshee and
- thoroughly soak the dog. You must be alert for the behaviour and you must
- be consistent in your correction no matter how insane you appear to your
- neighbours.
-
- When trying to correct a negative behaviour, your correction must occur while
- the dog is doing the "dirty deed" not after it has been done.
-
- Good luck.
