- I attended a cat show in Minnesota a few years ago and I noticed a lot of
- the sweet-faced Persians, not piggy-faced (all pushed in with the nose on
- the same plane as the eyes) were being shown. I was somewhat surprised,
- mainly because the piggy faces were so prevalent at other shows! One of
- the Persian owners told me that several judges at this particular show
- are known to prefer sweet faces, so the breeders who were sticking to the
- older standard were showing so that their cats could get some points.
- Unfortunately, many breeders are stuck following the characteristics that
- judges award points for and during the 80s the extremes were being
- rewarded. A vicious circle. Breeders want cats that win! Judges pick
- the extremes. Breeders breed for extremes. And then you get ugly cats!
-
- But, lately, the Traditional Siamese are coming back (yeah!) and I hope
- that the Fancy will concentrate on breeding healthy cats rather than
- concentrate on extreme characteristics.
