- Hello, cat lovers. I've been having an enigmatic dilemma with my
- feline for a few years now. It's possible that it's too late to alter this
- behavior (if, in fact, it should be altered). My three year-old male
- cat, Carlisle (a.k.a. Kitty Carlisle for those of you familiar with
- the actress of the same name), continuously insists on covering his
- food with our bathroom rug. I have always fed him dry catfood, and
- given that dry food doesn't have much of a smell, I am surprised that
- he confuses the instinct to cover up the *smell* in the litterbox with
- the *smell* in his food bowl. Whether or not he is about to eat, he's
- just finished eating, or he has no interest in the food, he covers it.
- Sometimes he is interested in what my husband and I are feasting upon,
- so sometimes when we finish our meal, we will allow him to partake of
- "licking the bowl". Even then, he makes a covering motion and pretends
- to use the carpet as a cover.
-
- In the beginning, we thought it was cute. Then we tried to see what
- might make him stop. Now, we're wondering if we should just chalk it
- up to confused instinct. It's not such a nuisance, I suppose, but the
- bathroom rug takes a beating. Has anyone else ever had such an
- experience? If so, what action(s) did you take? Should I be
- concerned? Your help is appreciated.
