- Fizzie needs his pills 3 times a day. We found the following works:
-
- First, all pills are put into empty gelatin capsules. You can get these at
- a drug store by knowing what to ask for (it seems the drug stores think anyone
- who asks for empty capsules must be doing something illegal). We found size
- 4 works best. You will probably need one of those pill cutters to slice up
- the pill to fit. With the pill in the capsule it is both tasteless and
- easier to swallow. We too tried mixing it in the his food at first and the
- llttle scamp would eat around a pill or not eat the stuff at all!
-
- Next we use a "pill gun." This is a little device that looks like an oversized
- hollow syringe. The capsule goes in followed by the plunger which shoots
- it out when pressed.
-
- You can get one of these from Wholesale Veterinary Supply (1-800-435-6940)
- called a "Pet Piller" item #45549 price $1.85.
-
- When "pill time" comes we announce it and find Fizzie (he now tolerates it
- and gives us little grief). We usually put him curled up, upside down, in
- our lap. Then use your left hand to gently pry open his mouth and "shoot"
- the pill with your right hand by placing the syringe halfway into his mouth.
- The object it to make sure it gets to the back of their throat, behind their
- tongue, so they have no choice but to swallow it. I usually close his mouth
- immediately and stroke his neck to encourage swallowing. My wife simply shoots
- it into the back of his throat. Maybe once a week he will manage to not
- swallow it on the first try. We then dry the capsule off and try again.
-
- Our newest problem is "goo time" where we have to try to put toothpaste (pretty
- gooey) onto his back teeth between the teeth and gums. Now *that* is something
- he isn't use to yet. At least he doesn't seem to mind the taste of the
- toothpaste [Lurkers: This is *animal* toothpaste. Do NOT use human toothpaste.
- Also, *do* remember to take care of your cats teeth! Our older cat had to have
- several removed because we didn't know to do this until it was too late. ]
-
- All this may seem like a pain but Fizzie is *definatly* worth it!
