  11. Prednisone is a drug that can have serious side effects, but as others have
  12. posted it is sometimes the only treatment for some disorders.  It should be
  13. used with caution but is standard therapy for asthma, some intestinal dis-
  14. orders, some chronic skin problems, etc.  Most vets will start treatment with
  15. a high dose to provide quick relief, then wean the cat down to the lowest dose
  16. that will control the symptoms.  It is very important to cut down on the dosage
  17. gradually.  Because it suppresses the immune system, it can make your cat more
  18. susceptible to colds and other diseases,so be sure it is up to date on
  19. vaccines.  It can also cause diabetes, but please note that this is rare and
  20. often irreversible (this happened to my cat and some others that I am aware
  21. of).  But please don't let this prevent you from giving it to your kitty!  As I
  22. said, used with caution it can often be the difference between life and death,
  23. or between an ill, uncomfortable pet and a healthy, happy one.
