- Prednisone is a drug that can have serious side effects, but as others have
- posted it is sometimes the only treatment for some disorders. It should be
- used with caution but is standard therapy for asthma, some intestinal dis-
- orders, some chronic skin problems, etc. Most vets will start treatment with
- a high dose to provide quick relief, then wean the cat down to the lowest dose
- that will control the symptoms. It is very important to cut down on the dosage
- gradually. Because it suppresses the immune system, it can make your cat more
- susceptible to colds and other diseases,so be sure it is up to date on
- vaccines. It can also cause diabetes, but please note that this is rare and
- often irreversible (this happened to my cat and some others that I am aware
- of). But please don't let this prevent you from giving it to your kitty! As I
- said, used with caution it can often be the difference between life and death,
- or between an ill, uncomfortable pet and a healthy, happy one.
