- "Allerpet" seems to give good results. You spray it on the cat's coat
- and it's supposed to cut down on dander. You need to be vigilent and
- make sure you're treating the cat according to directions.
-
- People with mild allergies find that bathing and grooming (by someone who
- isn't allergic) plus a diet with supplemental coat conditioners can make
- a difference. Ask someone who shows cats or your vet for specific
- products.
-
- A former officemate, who had developed a severe allergy after owning a
- cat for several years, hired someone to clean her house, which helped a
- lot (surprise!). When her cat died, she adopted a 1-year old Cornish Rex
- cat from a vet. (The cat was formerly owned by some jerks who wanted a
- stuffed cat rather than a real one that needed to be fed and loved, so
- they brought it in to the vet to euthanize. He couldn't destroy a
- healthy cat just because it didn't fit into someone's lifestyle, so he
- kept it as a blood donor until she called, asking about Rex breeders in
- the area.) She reported that her allergy seemed to go completely away
- with the Rex. But, some experts say that Cornish and Devon Rex cats
- still produce dander and have the enzyme in the saliva (usually
- considered the true allergen), so they really aren't hypoallergenic.
- Maybe less so than other cats?
-
- Someone on this list also reported good success with allergy shots.
-
- I also read about some new product on the market that neutralizes the
- enzyme in cat's saliva so that the allergen is eliminated. But the
- thought of giving medicine to my cat everyday gives me the heebie
- jeebies. Maybe if you started administering the stuff when it was a tiny
- kitten....
-
- Hope this helps.
