- Neither album is at all like the tradional style used on his album with
- Andy Irvine (I have not heard "Welcome Here Kind Stranger", but I suspect
- it is in the same vain as the AI/PB album.) "Trick or Treat" was strictly
- middle of the road pop and, IMHO, worthless. On the other hand I picked
- up "Songs and Crazy Dreams" the other week and was pleasantly surprised.
- This appears to be a compilation from several albums recorded in the 80's
- as he moved away from the traditional style. All but one are original
- compositions, and reasonably mainstream. The good news here is that there
- is still enough of life in the arrangements and singing that they don't
- suffer from the sterility to which "ToT" fell prey. The centerpiece of the
- album, in my opinion, is the one traditional tune he does, "Homes of
- Donegal". It's worth the price alone. The most obvious comparison is to
- Van Morrison. I had read seen this comparison in print but did not see any
- reason for it 'til I heard this album. Don't expect the old Paul Brady,
- there isn't enough of the great guitar work of his traditional days (check
- out "Arthur Mcbride" on the above mentioned AI/PB album from Green Linnet --
- Bob Dylan could not come close on his recent go at it), and a few of the
- songs are merely pleasant, but this cd was a happy find for me.
