- The song "You Never Even Call Me By My Name" was written by Steve
- Goodman. I don't know when/if he released it himself, but I do
- know that it was released by David Allan Coe in like 1975 and has
- been a big hit for him. I believe it was first released on his
- third album. At least that's what he's said in concert. It can
- be found on any of Coe's numerous Greatest Hits Albums (Great
- Hits, 17 Greatest Hits, For The Record- The First Ten Years, with
- the last being the most complete). It's a great tune that almost
- everyone know the chorus to. The lyrics are as follows:
-
-
- "You Never Even Call Me By My Name"
- a.p.b. David Allan Coe
-
- Well it was all that I could do
- To keep from cryin'
- Sometimes it seems so useless to remain
- But you don't have to call me "darlin'," darlin.
- You never even call me by my name
-
- You don't have to call me Waylon Jennings
- And you don't have to call me Charlie Pride.
- And you don't have to call me Merle Haggard, anymore.
- Even though you're on my fightin' side.
-
- CHORUS:
- And I'll hang around as long as you will let me
- I never minded standin' in the rain.
- You don't have to call me "darlin'," darlin.
- You never even call me by name
-
- (optional third verse)
- I've seen my name a few times in your phonebook
- And I've seen it on signs where I play.
- But the only time I know
- I'll hear "David Allan Coe"
- Is when Jesus has his final judgement day
-
- CHORUS
-
- (spoken by D.A.C.)
- Well a friend of mine named Steve Goodman wrote that song, and he
- told me it was the perfect country and western song. Well, I
- wrote 'im back a letter and told him it was not the perfect
- country and western song 'cause he hadn't said anything at all
- about mama or trains or trucks or prison or gettin' drunk. Well,
- he sat down and wrote another verse to this song and he sent it
- to me and after readin' it I realized that my friend had written
- the perfect country and western song. I felt obliged to include
- it on this album. The last verse goes like this here:
-
- Well I was drunk the day my mama got outta prison
- And I went to pick 'er up in the rain
- But before I could get to the station in my pickup..truck,
- She got runned over by a damned old train.
-
- REPEAT CHORUS
-
-
- Well, I guess that just about all there is to it. I hope
- y'all enjoy it and that you catch yourself singin' along while
- you read it.
