- I share the already-stated enthusiasm for the Solti and Abbado Chicago
- versions, giving the edge to Solti for sheer drive and power (and also
- for the recording, which has more atmosphere and clarity, even though it
- is analog). I'd also like to put in a pitch for the Klemperer, as the
- *second* recording to get. It's undeniably eccentric (the tempos are
- astonishingly slow in the outer movements, fully 50% slower than Solti
- in places), but extraordinarily revealing of the work's structure and
- design -- it's almost like one of those exploded diagrams that shows
- you how all the pieces of a complicated gadget fit together. Not for
- everyday listening, but indispensible nonetheless.
