- There's been some chatter on the Joust mailing list, but we might as
- well do it here where it belongs. :-)
-
- The Story So Far: Jeff Deeney and a gang of fellow Coloradans have been
- making an annual Memorial Day weekend pilgramage to the Moab/Canyonlands
- National Park area of southern Utah since the world was young. Last
- year, a bunch of us net.types crashed his party and invited ourselves
- along. Soil samples were taken, Park Rangers were terrorized, oil was
- spilled, and a good time was had by all.
-
- For some reason, folks think that a repeat performance this year is a
- good idea. :-)
-
- So far this year, Jeff has said that he's got other Memorial Day plans,
- but would like to do Moab some other time. Others are interested in it
- too, but there are no plans of any sort, yet. I guess it should be noted
- for those familiar with the Joust, that last year's Moab was anything but
- "organized". More like "see ya there". But, at least from my point of
- view, things worked out pretty well.
-
- Of course the one thing that any rec.moto.gather needs is a leader, and
- so far everyone (including myself) has been VERY careful to avoid
- getting roped in. Any volunteers out there?
-
-
- Just a few comments on last years Moab.
-
- I think avoiding a holiday weekend would be a good idea, mostly to
- avoid the crowds of non-motorized tourists that decend on both Moab
- and Canyonlands. We got hasseled by the Park Rangers for breaking a
- 15mph speed limit on Salt Creek that nobody knew existed. Without a
- large "civilian" population, the Rangers might not feel the need to
- make their presence known.
-
- There is also a huge variety of terrain, and some it may be, umm,
- "challenging" for bikes and riders of varying ability. No matter how
- you slice it, some bits are going to to be too easy for some, and
- unridable for others.
-
- If there's something called "The Death Ride", it might not be
- because it is deadly boring.
-
- Quicksand is nasty stuff!
