- A 17 foot rear wheel?!?!?! Wow!! It must take a ladder to mount and
- dismount, but I imagine it really rolls over those bumps :-)
-
- In general, the tires for 17" rear wheels are a higher profile than an
- 18" tire for a similar bike. The end result is that the overall tire
- diameter isn't that much different. The 17" wheels were a fad during the
- early to mid 80's. I think that they were more popular on off-road bikes
- as compared to motocross bikes. One of the advantages of the higher
- profile tire is that you could run a lower tire pressure and let the tire
- adsorb a lot of the rocks without worrying about a bent rim. The drawback
- claimed by the neon motocross riders (rocks, what are those?) is that it
- didn't offer as good of control in corners on the track. I doubt that many
- people on this planet could tell the difference. No, you don't have to
- worry about changing the steering geometry. By the time you take into
- account the tire geometry, you're talking less than 1/2" difference in ride
- height. I'd also be surprised if the wheel started hitting the bottom of
- the fender.
-
- Did anyone else out there have one of the first XR's with the 23" front
- wheels? Talk about hard to find tires for.
