- [Flash's cage tour description followed ...]
-
- I have just come back from doing a 10 day tour of the South island at the
- beginning of January, '93. Unfortunately I was also in a cage, but most of the
- way round I was thinking what fun it would be to do it on a bike. What Flash had
- to say is still true of the South. Lots of twisty roads and little traffic except
- for the top going from Nelson to Christchurch. Not many m'bikes either, although
- there were lots of peddlers with huge thighs ...
-
- Super petrol was cheapest around Ch'Church at 1.03 and unleaded was a little
- cheaper in the high 90's. Prices only varied by about 6c at the worst.
- Accomodation was easily available all of the way. We stayed in motels, but
- hostels were everywhere if that is your preference.
-
- There is lots to see on the South Island if your into nature. Penguins, whales,
- seals and of course the kiwi itself. There are also glaciers to climb, glow worm
- grotto's to visit and if you are into walking, there is no end of tracks all
- over the place. Te Anow and Milford Sounds were also very good, although when
- we were there it was very wet and there were lots of waterfalls on the sounds
- but not much visibility. Unfortunately Queenstown was completely washed out when
- we were passing through but we did see the kiwi there in the nature park near
- the gondola.
-
- If your taking your money in travellers chq. always use a bank. Westpac (and
- others ??) charge 5c a chq. for cashing them. The window operations at airports
- and the big cities take out about $NZ30 in every 400 you are cashing. This is
- probably true the world over but I guess I am just a naive traveller as we got
- caught out.
-
- Well this posting has probably already strayed away from the group so I better
- leave it there, but I think it would be a great trip on a bike. Cheers.
