- As a result of a request that I posted to this list last spring asking for
- someone to mail me their camping lists (I had seridously lost mine), I think
- that I may have inadvertenly become the DOD KotCL ("Keeper of the Camping
- List") ... :-) At anyrate, I wildly offered to post a compilation of any lists
- that I received ... well, it took a while (a *long* while!), but here it is ...
- six biker's camping lists, concatenated, sorted, duplicates collapsed, etc.,
- etc., etc. Surprisingly, there was very little duplication of specific items
- (generalities like "clothes", yes, but specific items, no). However, there
- was one item that was common to all lists ... yep, you guessed it --
- toilet paper ... :-)
-
- My suggestion is that unless you have a chase vehicle, that not *all* items
- need to be taken on every trip ... :-)
-
- Many thanks to the contributors (listed at the end of this post). If you have
- suggestions for additions, corrections, etc., let me know and I will include
- them in the next "edition" (hopefully sooner than next year!) ... have fun
- and spaceout a little as the snow is falling and you dream about all those
- wonderful trips later this year ... :-)

-
- Enjoying your Bike-Camping Trip (collective comments of contributors):
-
- Build up a good backrest with the gear you take (sleeping bag and pad are
- usually enough for this). Be able to lean back into this gear as you would
- into a highback chair and still be able to comfortably reach the handlebars.
-
- Pack the heavy stuff low in the saddlebags and the lighter stuff on top to
- keep the center of gravity low on the bike. Practice starting and stopping
- with your bike fully loaded to get a feel for how handling has changed
- before you get to a major intersection.
-
- Small tank bags are good for keeping stuff you need to access quickly (maps,
- gloves, energy bar, water bottle, etc.). Keep the contents of this bag light
- since it will throw the center of gravity off if it's too heavy.
-
- Ride slow and smell the roses. Getting into the vibes of the trip are more
- important than getting to the destination. Keep your time schedules flexible
- and your destinations dynamic. Don't be afraid to be a week late getting
- somewhere or to not get there at all.
-
- Credit cards are good in major towns but cold, hard cash and, usually,
- travelers checks are accepted anywhere.
-
- Stay street smart.
-
- Enjoy your ride; it's why you bought a bike to begin with.
