- I believe my 1981 Yamaha SR500 now has a sticky valve. The bike hadn't
- been used for almost 2 months (largely due to some fairly amazing weather
- here in San Diego). When I went to start it, it had little or no
- compression. I was eventually able to kick it to life and, after running
- for one minute, it then had reasonable compression. I attempted to make a
- compression test measurement but, lacking in strength, weight, or technique,
- was unable to acquire a useful measurement. I don't currently have access
- to a leakdown tester. It has done this once before, 6 months, 1000 miles ago.
-
- My questions:
- 1) Is this a sign that I need to do some immediate head work lest things get
- more expensive in a hurry?
-
- 2) Is this bike due for a valve job anyway. It now has 16000 miles on it.
-
- 3) Is this problem likely to go away assuming it gets its normal (100 miles/
- week) usage?
-
- 4) Am I wrong to believe its a valve? The compression release lever springs
- back when released. I always kick it through a few times before attempting
- to start it so it may be caused only after applying the compression release.
-
- Any advise would be appreciated.
