- Best time of year? Probably the next couple of months. Feb/March seem
- to be getting the best weather now, but it never gets really bad.
-
- Tips? I can't imagine it's that much different to Oz, but probably he
- should realize that 1000k is a hell of a long ride in NZ. We don't have
- many big long roads - most of them are fairly twisty - with a lot of
- really twisty ones! The cops are also on the lookout now, but fairly rare
- outside of main centers.
-
- I don't know much about hiring, but see if he can get hold of a Kiwi Rider
- there or when he arrives - they should have some ads for bike hire.
-
- A great deal of NZ is farming land, so if going for a cane along some back-roads,
- be ready for livestock on the road. On my Xmas tour I came across a mob of sheep,
- 5 cattle, 3 horses and various lambs in one day.
-
- The condition of roads is generally very good. Be aware that on AA maps not all
- unsealed roads are marked as such. If going off the main highways it could pay to
- check. Unfavouritest sign ever - "120km unsealed road before Murupara" (next town).
-
- The roads around the coast to East Cape are really good, usually empty apart from
- the odd kid on a horse. Folk around there wave at you! Wave back.
-
- Petrol costs from 99c to about $1.05 a litre (for super), unleaded is about 98c.
