  11.
  12. This is a nostalgic track plan.  Lower Edmonton station still exists.
  13. It is on the Liverpool Street line and an electric train calls there
  14. every twenty minutes or so.  I was at school in Edmonton in the 1950's
  15. when the old platforms of the Eastern Counties railway still survived.
  16. I thought I would set down a sketch of how the station used to look.
  17. The site was cleared in the 1970s and the ghastly `Edmonton Green'
  18. development was put up.  This development was so awfully built that
  19. market traders who had spent a lifetime standing on the real Green in
  20. the open air complained about how draughty it was!
  21.
  22. The branch line used to be the principal route between Enfield Town and
  23. London.  The service dates from about 1840.  An Auto Train, a 42-seater
  24. steam railbus with a wooden boiler, travelled between Enfield Town and
  25. Angel Road.  Passengers travelled on from Angel Road to Liverpool Street
  26. via Stratford.  Services between Lower Edmonton and Angel Road
  27. continued, though with more modern equipment, until the outbreak of war
  28. in 1939.  After that it carried freight and acted as an occasional
  29. diversionary route and as a platform for at least one special passenger
  30. train.  (If anyone has a track plan of Angel Road, please tell me.  It
  31. was a junction with a small marshalling yard and a four-track main line.
  32. Two of the four tracks survive and a short length of the branch survives
  33. as a spur.)
  34.
  35. The high level platforms were built later (1880s?), and they are still
  36. in use.  The booking office was rebuilt a few years ago, but the
  37. buildings at platform level have not changed since the fifties except
  38. that the lamps are electric and painted red now.
  39.
  40. The most unusual feature of the station is that the station was crossed
  41. in two places by rights of way.  A level crossing separated the two
  42. platforms.  I don't know whether one or the other of the platforms was
  43. used exclusively, or whether trains in one direction stopped at one
  44. platform and trains in the other direction stopped at the other
  45. platform.  However, I can clearly remember the footpath that crossed the
  46. western platform.  There were steps let into the platform edge, and you
  47. walked cross the track and up the steps, or vice versa.  When I know
  48. this station there was no sign of any station building on the low level
  49. platform that I can remember.
  50.
  51. Outside Lower Edmonton station was a horse trough which is of a little
  52. historic interest.  It was at this trough that the horse buses had
  53. stopped to refresh the horses.  Edmonton Green thus became a turning
  54. point for the trolleybuses, when they came, and after they ceased the
  55. motor buses kept up the tradition: buses still terminate at Lower
  56. Edmonton for no better reason than that it is where the horse trough
  57. once was!
  58.
  59. I have marked signals where I think they would have been.  I can
  60. remember the signals that guarded the level crossing; the others look
  61. right.  In the fifties the trains often operated through dense fog, and
  62. detonators on the rails let off a loud bang, in case the driver could
  63. not see the signal.
  64.
  65. Incidentally, Enfield Town station, which was the terminus of the
  66. Eastern Counties branch, is still there and is very heavily used by
  67. commuters to London.  The trains now go via Lower Edmonton (the high
  68. level platforms) and into Liverpool Street via a more direct route.
