  20. Yes. In the armed services I ran across a black belt who taught unarmed
  21. combat.  He took a perverse delight in pointlessly demonstrating
  22. techniques of unarmed combat to novices - painfully.  He took
  23. uninitiated recruits and asked them to attack.  When they did
  24. he reacted forcefully, more that was necessary, to show how
  25. the attacker could be incapacitated.  It was pure sadism and served
  26. no purpose.  When volunteers were not forthcoming, he began
  27. to select people from among the recruits and demonstrate.
  28. All this, in an "introductory" first session.

  30. A friend of mine was there one month after me, shoto kan 3rd dan, judo
  31. 1st dan, and got extremely upset. He is tall and skinny and managed to get
  32. himself selected to demonstrate a "defense against a kick".  My friend
  33. told the idiot that he didn't want to, and the guy (who was large at
  34. 195, about 95 Kgs), said to get on with it or he would "get really nasty".
  35. Suffice to say that he needed major orthodontal treatment after being
  36. kicked in the face with a size 11 army boot.

  38. My friend "inherited" the instructor's position shortly after
  39. he completed his basic training and an advanced course.
