- 'How to fight dogs' is an ancient and venerable thread that comes
- up on rec.martial-arts every so often. Usually there are a bunch
- of tentative ideas about how to defeat dogs, a little discussion
- from people who have some experience dealing with them, and it
- winds down. My feeling is that the way to think of a dog in a
- fight is as a small, fast, armored chopping machine with some
- vulnerabilities that are all on the other side of the armored
- chopping engine. (If it isn't obvious, my advice about fighting
- dogs is: don't).
-
- As for other animals, I know a few stories about people fighting
- them, ranging from the sublimely unbelievable legend to the
- absurd anecdote. One of my favorites in the former category is
- the story of Wu Sung, a martial hero monk of China, who is said
- to have been caught sleeping by a hungry tiger. If you have
- ever seen a figurine of a Chinese fellow smacking a tiger
- in the head with his fist in a Chinatown shop, this is Wu Sung
- Da Hu, "Wu Sung Kills the Tiger," the outcome of the legend.
-
- In the latter category, there is the wonderful story about
- Sin The, who started Shao Lin training at age seven. He says
- he was a bit of a hothead in his teens. The story is that
- he was kicked by a horse and, angry about it, kicked the horse
- back, knocking it into a ditch.

- Be nice to the dogs. Avoid threatening movements. Carry a gun and, if
- you are forced to defend yourself against them, shoot them a lot of
- times. I love dogs; I love raising them and training them. I even
- know a few of their weaknesses. But I don't want to fight them.
