- Budo Shinbun for Windows
- Press Release
- 16 January 1993
-
- The 1,000-year-old tradition of Japanese martial arts has
- been merged with the 10-year-old tradition of personal computers
- to bring you Budo Shinbun, the world's first electronic magazine.
-
- The first thing you notice when you start Shinbun is that
- it doesn't look like any computer bulletin board system that you
- have ever seen. That's because it's not a BBS; it's an electronic
- magazine. It looks like a magazine, acts like a magazine, and you
- operate it like a magazine.
-
- The amazing thing is that it is fully automatic. Just select
- the Get New button and it dials in, retrieves any new articles, and
- transfers mail. You open the magazine by pressing the Open button,
- select an article from the Table of Contents, and read. There are no
- esoteric computer commands to memorize: Just click the left mouse button
- to turn the page left, click the right button to turn right.
-
- What type of articles will you find? Aside from purely technical
- pieces, you will find features on Japanese language, culture, philosophy,
- history, and many other topics or interest to the serious student of budo.
-
- Want to write a letter to the editor, or drop a note to another
- subscriber? Select the Mail button and Shinbun will automatically address
- the note for you. When you're done, it even signs your name. The letter
- will be transferred the next time you use the Get New function.
-
- A Network of Traditionalists
- Scattered throughout the United States there are many small
- groups of students practicing the traditional martial arts of Japan.
- They tend to have little contact with the mainstream of modern arts
- and rarely get a chance to meet with other traditionalists. Budo Shinbun
- changes that. It offers a fast and easy way to network with other people
- who share your interests.
-
- Looking for information on a particular topic? Just drop a quick
- note to the Letters column and you can have a response within hours. Want
- to buy an antique Japanese sword, or have some custom calligraphy done for
- your dojo? Check The Market Place. Just got the blahs? A glance at the In
- My Opinion... column will generally reveal an editorial guaranteed to raise
- your blood pressure.
-
- Budo Shinbun marks the end of the isolated dojo. As a subscriber
- you become a member of a new family stretching from Norway to Hong Kong,
- and Canada to Mexico. These people, many of whom measure their martial
- arts experience in decades, not years, are available to share their knowledge
- and experience at the touch of a key.
-
- Technical Data:
- Budo Shinbun requires MS Windows (version 3.1), a minimum of
- 5 megabytes of free hard-disk space, and a modem. It supports modem
- speeds from 2,400 to 57,600 bps.
-
- Ordering Information:
- The Shinbun program disk, which includes a selection of articles,
- is $49.95 (US), shipping included. Upon registration, you receive a free
- one-month subscription. The subscription rate for continued access is $6
- per month, or $60 per year.
