- Note that resistance to high-temperature does not neccessarily imply
- resistance to fire. Also the wicks of a torch do not get all that hot
- because the flame reaction is happening some distance from the wick.
- Also fuel is evaporating off the wick, cooling it. (If you've ever
- caught a torch by the flaming wick you probably didn't get burned unless
- you touched a screw or held on too long.)
- Once I used 30% water 70% ethanol as a fuel. It burned but the wick
- was cold and wet if you touched it.
- The wick temperature only rises as the fuel is running low. This is why
- you're advised to blow torches out before they burn out -- it prevents the
- wick from heating up and degrading.
- What I would like to know is how does one control the temperature of
- the actual flame? Pyrotechnicians have great knowledge of how to control
- reaction temperatures in fireworks -- but these are solid state reactions.
- A pyro I've corresponded with claims adding water to the fuel (I'm talking
- about alcohol here) would have little effect on the flame temp because
- the specific heat of gaseous water is not significantly different from
- that of air.
