- I don't know what the added cost of printing red/blue
- stereograms might be, but it is probably something like the price of a
- colour page even though only two colours are needed. I have always
- found that red/blue stereograms degrade the images significantly. It
- works pretty well for drawing, diagrammes and comic books, but gets
- irritating when a photograph has any degree of subtle shading, as
- against high contrast. I have seen photos presented in red/blue, but
- have never tried to make one.
-
- One hint about their suitability is how quickly red/blue was
- abandoned when the polaroid became available, both for slide projection
- and for movies. In my experience the best display is through a good
- viewer made of optically correct glass, second is a plastic viewer,
- third is free-viewing, next is polaroid projection and the last choice
- is red/blue pairs.
-
- I'm glad you had no trouble with the pairs in _JW_. They are
- nearly the perfect size for people who don't have much experience with
- free-viewing. With a bit of practice you can also view pics about
- double those printed there. Anything much bigger than that requires you
- to switch them for cross-eyed viewing. Salvadore Dali even did a large
- painting intended for cross-eyed viewing and Rene' Magritte also did
- some stereo paintings in the same format.
-
- What we need now is an artist/juggler to design a stereo T-shirt
- so that we could force people to cross their eyes whenever we walk
- toward them. ... Maybe Martin Frost could also concoct some two-hand
- passing patterns for crossed eyes, kind of a Mills Mess for the
- eyeballs.
-
- An now, back to reality.
