- I was sitting around trying to figure out how to con, err. . . . I mean
- convince my wife into letting me buy yet another gun. Excuses like
- "You only let me buy 3 guns last year", or "It's Jan 26 and I still
- haven't bought a gun this year" didn't seem like they would work.
- Since I have been considering a target/varmint type of rifle, I
- suddenly remembered an option I hadn't really given much thought
- about. In Boulder Colorado, about 10 miles from where I live,
- we have a Bank that doesn't give away toasters and coffee makers
- for new accounts, they give away Weatherby rifles. I dug up an
- old copy of American Rifleman to see if they had any details, since
- I remembered them doing an article on them a while back. Basicly
- instead of getting interest on your CD, you get a rifle. The nice
- part is that you get the rifle right away, (within 1-2 weeks), after
- opening the Certifcate of Deposit.
-
- I found the article in the August 92 (LA Aftermath) issue. While
- the article explained the program, it didn't give any specific details.
- about the cost/terms involved. So, at lunchtime yesterday, I took a
- ride down to their promotions office in Boulder.
-
- For starters, this isn't your typical bank office. On the table in
- the waiting area was AR, AH, Outdoor life, and catalogues from Browning,
- Weatherby, Pentax along with reprints of the AR/Bank of Boulder article.
- Walking past the various offices there were copys of Shotgun_News,
- Guns & Ammo, and other such magazines lying around. (Hey, I wonder if
- they need a senior 'C'/Unix person!). They are in the process of
- re-printing their promotion handout for 93' so all they had was the 92'
- available. What I did find out is that you have alot of flexability
- in choosing the package that most pleases you. You can choose from
- almost the entire Browing and Weatherby rifle/shotgun line. You can
- choose from the Browning fishing/outdoor catalogue, or from their
- line of gun safes. Also available are choices from Zeiss, Pentax,
- Boyt, Impact Cases, Sage, Ross Reels, Simms, Courtland, Ft Knox Safes,
- and Rolex! You can mix and match, creating custom packages.
-
- Two of the examples they provided for 92' were:
-
- A) Weatherby Mark V Deluxe Package, 24" barrel, Weatherby Supreme
- 3x9x44 scope with Autocom and lumiplex reticle, 2 piece buehler
- mounts, in choice of .224WM, .240WM, .257WM, .270WM, 7mmWM, .300WM,
- .22-250, .30-06
-
- B) Weatherby Mark V Hunters Package, 24" barrel, Weatherby Supreme
- 3x9x40 variable scope, 2 piece buehler mounts, custom leather sling,
- Boyt field case, Impact 2-gun hard aluminum case, Pentax 9x20 binoculars,
- in choice of .224WM, .240WM, .257WM, .270WM, 7mmWM, .300WM, .22-250,
- .30-06
-
- The terms were as follows for 92' (They said that the 93' 6 year is a bit
- more $, and the 15 year is a bit less $)
-
- 6year 8year 15year
-
- A $3580 $2917 $1961
-
- B $4353 $3584 $2384
-
- They can go up to 22 years on the deposit, and will even loan you
- the money if you don't have it. The prices will vary depending on
- the package you choose/create. As far as income taxes are concerned,
- they take THEIR cost on the package, divide it by the term of the
- deposit, and send you a tax statement every year just as if it was
- accrued interest. This way you don't get hit with $1,500+ of income
- for which you now owe taxes on. They also give you a free membership
- in the NRA with the rifle. If you are already a member, you can
- give the membership to a friend. If more business were like this!
-
- Their 800 number for info is 1-800-525-2836. I have NO connection with
- this bank. This is just something I'm thinking about doing, and thought
- I'd pass the info along. (Well they did give me a Weatherby and Browning
- catalogue to take with me. That Weatherby Varmintmaster in .22-250 with
- a 3x9x44 scope and a accubrake looks REALLY nice!)
