  12. What I did with my old lilacs was a mix of the above.
  13. First I cut out all but about 5 of the shoots and these flowered the
  14. next year.
  15. The next year I selected the new shoots that I wanted to
  16. retain--again about 6, and cut out ALL the other new shoots and the 5
  17. taht I had kept the first time around.  These 6 then were old enough
  18. to flower the following year.
