- What I did with my old lilacs was a mix of the above.
- First I cut out all but about 5 of the shoots and these flowered the
- next year.
- The next year I selected the new shoots that I wanted to
- retain--again about 6, and cut out ALL the other new shoots and the 5
- taht I had kept the first time around. These 6 then were old enough
- to flower the following year.
