  13. Playing at the club last nite, we came to the table of a pair who was
  14. already plenty annoyed at us, because we had made a ruckus during the
  15. previous round, thereby disturbing their tranquility.

  17. On the first board of the round, I dealt and opened 1C (alerted
  18. as Precision).  Next hand bid 2C (not alerted).  Now, experience has
  19. shown that on this auction, 75% of the time RHO doesn't know what the 2C
  20. bid is.  That is, either its Michaels and RHO thinks it is Natural, or
  21. vice versa.  In any case, they never alert it or and they usually
  22. explain it wrong.  But, in any case, partner passes, and I alert.  The
  23. reason for the alert is that, over an overcall, this pass shows
  24. specifically 0-5 HCP, and I've been told that that agreement warrants an
  25. alert.  However, in the instant case, I'm not real sure what it is going
  26. on, because I don't really know what the 2C bid is.

  28. Anyway, RHO now asks me to explain the alert and I respond by asking
  29. what the 2C bid means.  She says that I cannot ask because it is not my
  30. turn to bid.  I say that I can't tell what the double means w/o knowing
  31. what the 2C bid means (note: in this environment, 2C could be anything,
  32. but it is most likely intended as either natural or Michaels)  At this
  33. point, she got nasty and said (essentially) that if I didn't have an
  34. answer on tap, that I should not have alerted.  I said (essentially)
  35. "OKfine."  She then called the director, and eventually I said something
  36. to the effect that if the 2C was natural, then the pass showed 0-5.

  38. But I am curious as to what the theoretical solution to the problem is.
  39. How can I explain my partner's bids w/o  knowing what the opps bids mean?
