- >According to my old Square Dance instructor,
-
- I'm not responding directly to the referenced article, but it brought
- to mind some comments that I'll set out for discussion.
-
- My first thought is that rotation is "built in" with square dancing.
- Even couples that square up together end up learning and practicing the
- calls with the different people in their square for that tip.
-
- On the other hand, in general those few couples that come to lessons
- tend to be outshined by the performance of single students. (Of course,
- that is merely based on my quite limited experience.) My assumption,
- however, is that one of the two in those couples is not really
- enthusiastic about learning. Rotating partners might keep some of them
- from attending; a few people might call that a good thing.
-
- Since the primary purpose, experience with different people, does not
- necessitate rotating partners in square dancing, I would not confuse my
- sympathy for some people with support for a mandatory rotation policy.
- Those couples that would have gone home mad at each other from the old
- instructor's class have my sympathy.
-
- Those who know me might be surprised by this opinion because I'm a
- great advocate of order. (I prefer parties to have activities planned,
- for example.) Rotating doesn't prevent people from showing preferences,
- though, and I wouldn't feel the gratitude I do to those who came to
- angel when I was a student if they had not been dancing with me of their
- own volition.
