  11. One of my local vets taught me a trick with pregnant mares that has worked
  12. every time for predicting foaling withing 24 hours.  
  13. You DO need a gentle mare for this, one who is not nasty about someone 
  14. handling her rear end.  Anyway, gently (VERY gently) part the vaginal
  15. lips.  If the mare is rosy pink, don't get excited.  If the area inside
  16. is deep purple, you will almost certainly have a new small stranger in
  17. the barn very soon.  I've managed to predict foaling three times out of
  18. three this way.
