- I'll tell you how I (try) to keep warm and then relate a funny story!
-
- First, silk long underwear, then jeans, and then chaps.
- Turtle neck, heavy wool sweater, then my waxed cotton Barbour coat.
- Now Barbour coats in the US are expensive, but I bought mine in England
- where they make them and it was 1/2 the price as one here. It is by
- far the warmest coat I own. It just keeps that wind out.
- Then a scarve, then those little ear muffs that fit under your helmet,
- then my helmet. Then thinsulate riding mittens. Now getting on the
- horse is tricky since I can hardly move at this point! Oh yea,
- sock liners and wool socks. To top it all off, I place either a wool
- cooler or the wool quarter sheet across my legs and believe it or not
- that helps more than anything else!
-
- Now my story - Chicago area, snow is partially melted, still windy as
- everything (hard to believe they named it the windy city for its
- politians, it's so windy here!) and I took my mare out on a trail ride
- on Sat. She lives outside, but I have been taking her down to the local
- hunter barn to steel the indoor arena due to footing lately.
- Anyways, I thought, "why ride with my stirrups at jumping length? I'll
- just cramp my knees up in my hunt seat saddle and it's so cold anyways..."
- So I dropped my stirrups 1 1/2 holes. Don't forget I have the quarter sheet
- draped across my legs also. Well, the footing wasn't too bad because the
- snow mobiles have been over it enough to clear the ground in some places.
- We get to the 'gallop field'. Now this field is not named so without
- due reason! It's a wide open field with nice trails all through it.
- Well Liz decides the footing is suitable, and so I allow her to break into
- a nice canter. Well, she bunches back on her haunches and takes off at
- a major gallop, bucking all the way! My only though was, if anyone
- sees me out here, stirrups way too long, blanket wrapped around my legs
- flapping all over the place, on a galloping, bucking hrose, they
- are SERIOUSLY going to question my ability/sanity! What the heck, it
- sure was FUN!! And Liz enjoyed it too!
