- Of all the people I ride with, I like to think I am the most safety
- conscious. This weekend, my friends and I took advantage of the
- sunny weather to go out and ride (it had been about 4 weeks )
- A friend of mine had just bought a new horse and we decided to take
- him with the group and see how he did. Now, we all feel this is the
- worst time of the year to ride-the horses all frisky from the brisk
- air, excited by the first good sunlight, and the footing not great.
-
- Anyway, we had an exciting but safe ride, all the horses behaved
- resonabley well. When I got home I did a REALLY stupid thing. I
- had not bothered to hook the butt chain behind my mare. (first dumb
- mistake) My Miley trailer has two latches that swing across each
- door and are secured by pins. Without thinking, I pulled the pin
- out the the top latch, the bent down to pull the pin out of the
- bottom latch (I guess intending to pull back both latches at the
- same time). But as soon as I had the bottom one pulled back, my
- mare just backed out, causing the top latch to fly back and hit me
- square in the temple! I guess my guardian angel was around that day
- because though it really hurt and caused a huge goose egg, it was
- high enough up not to knock me out. So I guess I really got sence
- knocked into me. I guess you are never too old to be really
- careful. And, I usually don't do it this way
-
- I also stupidly tried to move our pony from one corral to the other.
- Just threw a lead rope around her neck. She was prance and tried
- to walk right into me so I bopped her with my free hand on the side
- of the check. She spun, yanked the rope out of my hand, and kicked
- me behind the knee. All my fault. (though I made her run on the
- lunge line and obey me for a half hour!)
- Please, all of you, be careful!
