- Something that hasn't been said yet in this discussion is that one also
- carries insurance for liability - if the horse does some damage or
- injury, then the cost of compensation to the owner of damaged property
- or damaged critter/person is also covered although this has a limit
- (can't remember just what). I carry a standard equine
- insurance policy for $110 Cdn annually, which includes $1,000,000 liability,
- mortality reimbursement of $2000 (original cost of the mare was $900
- in poor condition, with an endorsement from a qualified instructor, they
- agreed to the higher value), tack insurance against theft/loss and
- a death cost benefit up to $1500 in the event that veterinary attempts
- to save a dying horse are unsuccessful. I don't consider this expensive,
- especially since I'm paying for liability on a horse that tends to
- get just a little full of herself, on occasion. :-)
-
- I can appreciate the value of liability insurance - my friend's horse
- was chased into a fence by a more aggressive horse last July and last
- I heard the vet bills were over $3200 and counting. The owner of the
- aggressive horse agreed at first to help out with the bills and if he
- had come forth with even a little of it...well, he's moved away, vanished,
- etc. and my friend has filed a court claim for half of it. Messy. Better,
- I think, to carry liability insurance and deal up front. Saves friendships.
-
- I could also add colic surgery insurance (rather expensive) and trailer
- insurance to the policy if I wanted it.
