- Hi, my name is Gerardo Toledo I am 25, and I have been an avid
- reader for about six months. I work in Engineering at Concurrent
- Computer Corp. in Westford Ma. and I too have been a horse lover
- since early childhood. Although, I had read everything I could
- get my hands on about horses and riding techniques, I didn't
- actually begin lessons until last August and now I can't get
- enough.
-
- Horses were always a peaceful haven to daydream about when I
- needed to get away from the reality of life. Then I met Theresa,
- who is now my wife. She had lived what I only dreamed about. She
- had been a barn brat all of her life at a training stable in her
- hometown. She had given it up in high school when her parents
- could no longer afford to lease a horse for her. She would get
- really down in the dumps when she saw eventing on television
- and realized that we might never afford to get her there again.
- I soon promised her that I would get her the horse, and on her
- own property to boot.
-
- I threw my plan into high gear when I heard that her old trainer
- was selling his 25 acre horse farm. That deal did not work out
- and he ended up taking it off the market. We promptly found a
- 50 acre property with capacity for 17 horses that had been used
- as strictly a boarding facility. The owner, after many years in
- the business, had ramped down from a full barn of 17 horses to
- 4. With the exception that there was no arena, everything was
- perfect. We wasted no time in completing the purchase and closed
- in late August. Let me tell you that I don't think either of us
- has ever been happier. We have 6 borders and 2 horses of our own.
- Our babies are Chickory (Princess), a 4 year old thoroughbred mare,
- and Tri's Love, a 17 year old Standardbred mare. Aside from our
- one lesson each per week we mostly ride on the trails on and
- around our property.
-
- So now we are faced with the fact that we need at least an outdoor
- arena in order to attract more borders, but its tough to attract
- more borders without the arena.
-
- Well, I'm sorry this got so long. I really struggled to get it down
- to this length. I would love to pen pal with anyone (Kyle?) who has
- experienced some of the pitfalls of the horse business. Or any
- local horse people?
