- I can't address the leasing part of the issue in this thread, but the
- above information does not match my experience. The current annual
- rate we pay for a dressage horse (no jumping) is 3.4%, which means we
- would pay the horse's value in 29 years, so if he lived to age 58 we
- would pay twice in premiums what we would get back. I believe premiums
- for jumping horses are in the 4-5% range.
-
- We don't have my wife's horse insured for what he is worth, because it
- would be too hard to prove the value if something happened. We bought
- him as a 3-year-old and my wife trained him to the FEI level, so there
- aren't any receipts that show his true worth. We insure him only so
- that if something does happen to him, we'll have enough money to buy
- another 3-year-old with equivalent potential.
-
- We did have a broodmare insured for her purchase price, since that was
- more of a business proposition. She was put down after exploratory
- colic surgery, and the insurance paid exactly what we insured her for.
- In that case we paid 6.8% of her value in premiums and got back 100%
- of her value (which helped pay the vet bills and buy a replacement).
-
- So I do believe in insurance, just like I insure a car or a house, where
- I don't have the money on hand to replace it easily in case of a loss.
- My car isn't worth $40,000, in fact it's worth less than $10,000, so
- I really don't see much of a difference. The premium for a horse may
- be higher, but so is the risk.
