- These bio's have been fun, so I thought I would join the herd of posters.
- I am glad to read that there are quite a few people who didn't get to
- truly indulge in their horse habit until they were 20, 30, 40+... I'm
- still envious of all of y'all who had access to horses when young! Ah well..
- about me...
-
- My name in Jill Engel, I'm 26, and working on my Masters in Mechanical/
- Environmental Engineering. I hope to be done this summer and to find a "real"
- job again. I have made the decision to buy my first horse as soon as I am
- settled in a new job and location and can hardly hold still in anticipation.
- This decision was made after I leased a Morgan mare this past summer. Triscuit
- is 14 and had not been ridden a lot recently, but we had a grand time trail
- riding, practicing basic things like turn on the forehand, relaxing, bareback
- riding a bit, and all those things one can do when leasing. Before that I
- have taken years of lessons (used as an opportunity to ride, as well as learn).
- I probably learned the most when I worked at Pleasant Hill Farm near Austin
- in exchange for lessons and riding. I was 21 and had finally gotten a car
- at college. I called every stable in the area until I found Pleasant Hill,
- where they let me feed, clean stalls, do turn-outs, etc. so I could ride.
- Boy, I did not know how good I had it those two years!
-
- Now, I am learning jumping (again, I did it for a year when I lived in Los
- Angeles between undergrad and grad school) on a fat white horse named Purty.
- We're having fun. I also still ride at Moondrift Morgans (where Triscuit is).
- School keeps me from leasing (money and time) though I still ride twice a
- week. I seem to ride Moondrift's "trouble" horses (such as Mayday, who has
- taken to bolting when asked for a canter. Great name, eh?). I don't know
- if I am really qualified to be doing this (even supervised) but it teaches
- me training techniques and the difference between fear and resistance. I
- miss Triscuit very much, though I say hello to her and ride her in lessons
- on occasion.
-
- Other than that, I was a horse crazy kid, and was in weepy tears when sorting
- my Breyers at my parents home this past Christmas. I had wanted a horse so
- badly and was reminded of that when looking at the tiny tack I had made, the
- barn I designed, the poems I had written. My parents threaten to buy me
- a horse for graduation since I once mentioned it was my only childhood
- disappointment. However, they want to tie it to the tree in front of my
- duplex and leave the rest to me! I can't say I'd complain too much... (8
