- Hello All -
- The bios I've been reading have been alot of fun, so I decided to make one
- too! (the first one was way too long, so I hope this attempt is shorter.)
-
- My name is Rosalie Ewald, and I have one horse, named Shogun. He's a
- grey arab gelding, with dark mane and tail. We do competitive trail riding,
- and I want to try some endurance races this year. I am also learning to
- drive a cart, and have a pony lined up to do a competitive trail drive
- with. (we just need to practice and condition!) I'm also learning to navigate
- obstacles in the cart.
-
- I first rode the neighbor's horse while I was in high school. She was a
- grouchy mare, and I only got to ride her a couple of times. In college,
- a friend of mine had a shetland mare and stallion, and their baby. He gave
- me the stallion to try to break (boy, what I didn't know!). Well, nobody got
- hurt, but he didn't get broke, either. I gave him back.
-
- I started taking lessons when I was 23 or 24, and living in New Mexico.
- My husband was in graduate school, and I had my first real job. I wanted to
- learn western riding, but the only school was english, so there I was in a
- smooth saddle, learning to jump, "forward seat." I rode there about a year.
-
- Fast-forward: We moved back to the midwest, I took another month or two of
- lessons, and then we moved to Baltimore, MD, where we've lived for 9 years.
- It took awhile, I got abuse about my "forward seat" position, but finally I
- found the farm where I now take lessons and board Shogun. There are a lot of
- opportunities to learn at this farm - the owner breeds arabs, anglo-arabs and
- ponies, and trains all kinds of horses and ponies to ride and drive. She
- also teaches combined training skills (dressage, stadium jumping and cross-
- country), trail riding, and basic safe riding. I've learned about managing
- horses in a herd setting, feeding, worming, medications (routine, emergency).
- I also get to help out with the training and breeding.
-
- What pays for all of this equine activity? I have been working as a data
- tech and programmer in astronomy most of the time. Currently, I'm at
- Space Telescope Science Institute, supporting the Hubble Space Telescope.
