  13.                        Welcome to Russia!
  14.    Why not  try Mt Elbrus right away?  If you want to see at your
  15. feet the Caucasus, the 1100 km long mountain system, this is what
  16. you  need.  The "Elbrus-from-the-North" Firm offers you an ascent
  17. of the highest mountain in Europe. You'll follow the route of the
  18. first  Russian expedition to climb Mt Elbrus from the North,  led
  19. by Gen.  Emmanuel in 1829.  Part of the route coincides with  the
  20. Ancient  Silk  Road  that connected China with the Mediterranean,
  21. and which was travelled in the later middle ages by  Marco  Polo.
  22. You'll  see the unique ecologically perfect region of the Northen
  23. part of the Caucasus and will witness the magnificent beaty of Mt
  24. Elbrus.
  25.    The region is a  nature  reserve;  there  are  practically  no
  26. holiday-makers or chance visitors, nature has been left untouched
  27. here.
  28.                      PROGRAMME OF THE ASCENT
  29.    Day 1:  Arrival to the Mineralny Vody's   airport.   30-minute
  30.            bus-ride   to   the   neighbouring   spa   Pyatigorsk.
  31.            Accommodation in the best-quality sanitariums.
  32.    Day 2:  Flight from  Mineralny  Vody to the base camp (2800 m)
  33.            on the northen slopes  of  Mt  Elbbrus.  Walk  to  the
  34.            Refuge Hut (3900 m).
  35.    Day 3:  Acclimatisation   outings  to  the  Valley  of  Stone
  36.            Mushrooms, to the hot and cold mineral springs, alpine
  37.            skiing.
  38.    Day 4:  Acclimatisation ascent to the Lentz Rocks (  5000  m).
  39.            Alpine skiing.
  40.    Day 5:  Skiing. Rest day.
  41.    Day 6:  Ascent of one (or both) of the two summits of Mt Elbrus
  42.            (5642 m and 5621 m). Descent to the Hut.
  43.    Day 7:  Flight back to Mineralny Vody and Pyatigorsk.
  44.    Days 8-9: Reserve days to make up for any delays caused by bad
  45.            weather. Weather permitting,  trips to the famous stud
  46.            - farms, sightseeing in Pyatigorsk and nearby spas.
  47.    The groups are provided with porters,  interpretes and medical
  48. aids. This route to Mt Elbrus from the North is safest.  The firm
  49. guarantees the ascent of Mt Elbrus.
