- A year or two ago, there was an (highly controversial) article in
- Backpacker by some guy who claimed that for most people, it was dumb to
- take food on a backpack trip. His point was that most people carry a
- little excess weight all the time anyway, that periodic fasting is a
- time-tested tradition in many cultures, that our genes provide built in
- support for fasting, as a result of our species' hunter-gatherer
- origins, and that almost anyone could thrive, even benefit, from a week
- with no food.

- So the ultimate lightweight backpack trip is to leave the food, stove,
- pots, etc. home.
