- It's a legend/story.
-
- It's documented around MSR Newsletter #8 or so which I have since lost
- (but I still have 1-7).
- The problem was Taiwan SIGG clones. I still own one for carrying fuel.
- It had concave bottoms which cracked under pressure.
-
- I have just retired my G/K. One should not get sentimental about gear,
- but it lasted me 15+ tough years. I regarded it as one of my additional
- margins of safety for burning diesel or car fuels in emergencies (only
- came close to this twice). I mean I could have just kept my old Svea 123
- like Fletcher, but it was the sub-zero ski trip of Telescope Peak which
- donated it to my old friend Vicki. MSR "field maintainability" was great.
- We cooked everything from melting snow for water to moo shu pork in the
- Whites, gung pow chicken in Yosemite, fondues (cheese and chocolate),
- trout and salmon, from CA to Alaska and all States and Provinces in between.
- It had its share of stories and the challenges with priming by other
- climbing partners.
-
- I don't like the plastic pump shaft of the newer XG/K2s or Whisperlights.
- But like transplants, I am salvaging parts of the G/K for the XG/K:
- the silly 8 oz cup cover (dipping cup) and the flint striker,
- so I don't have to use the Bic(tm) or a match. The striker was
- great but most people I know could never use them. Truly one of the
- greatest pieces of gear ever made.
- The "stove" was never given a "name." It will be missed.
