  14. Well, deciding how much a 20 year old camper is worth
  15. is not easy.   Here in San Diego, most pop tops 
  16. around 69-72 are running about $2,000 with various
  17. things that need to be fixed.  Your best bet is
  18. to find one that runs, if it connects with your soul
  19. and you think its the one for you, take it to a VW
  20. mechanic and have them do a presale check for you.
  21. Yes I know John Muir tells you how to do it but I
  22. suggest a professional for the following reason:

  24.     They will tell you everything that needs to
  25.     be fixed, much of which is not readily apparent,
  26.     and they will also be able to give you a 
  27.     dollar estimate on how much each of those
  28.     items will cost to be repaired.

  30.     I used this method when I bought my van.  I almost
  31.     bought a super clean 1976 poptop for $2,000 - full
  32.     camp equipment, etc.  However, the mechanic who
  33.     did the check for me said the engine wasn't going
  34.     to last another 5,000 miles.  This checkup cost
  35.     me $40 and saved me the price of a new pancake
  36.     enginie (about $1500).

  38.     The second van I took in too be check out had
  39.     no major problems but quite a few minor ones.
  40.     I was able to use the repair estimate from 
  41.     the mechanic to renegoiate the asking price
  42.     which then dropped $500

  44. Also, keep in mind that most of th campers you will
  45. look at will vary in terms of what type of camp equipment
  46. they have.   In order to decide what's important to
  47. you, you need to think about the purpose of this camper.

  50. Will you be taking short 1-2 weeks camping trips or
  51. will this be your home for a period of time?  If you
