- About which engines are freewheeling: the "rule of thumb" is
- that virtually all American engines are freewheeling, while most
- European and Japanese (except Toyota, Subaru, and Suzuki)
- engines are not. When I say American, I mean American designed
- and built, not a transplant or re-badge.
-
- Source: Motor magazine, August 1991, for 1981 to 1990 cars.
- (Shows a complete list by manufacturer). The only
- non-freewheeling American engines shown on the list are the old
- Ford 1.6L (not 1.9L) Escort, and the Chrysler (Eagle?) Medallion.
-
- Note that the GM Quad 4 and Toyota four-valves are freewheeling,
- so that has nothing to do with it. I think it has more to do
- with corporate philosophy.
